The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown.” H.P. Lovecraft

Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1890 – 1937) was the forefather of modern horror having created the Cthulhu mythos.  LOVECRAFT: FEAR OF THE UNKNOWN is a chronicle of the life, work and mind behind these weird tales.

These tales have intrigued writers such as Stephen King, Robert Bloch and Robert E. Howard.  Their influence can be seen in film (Re-animator, Hellboy, and Alien), games (The Call of Cthulhu role playing enterprise), music (Metallica, Iron Maiden) and pop culture in general.

With the recent publication of his collected works by The Library Of America, Lovecraft has joined Edgar Allan Poe and Ambrose Bierce as part of the nation’s literary heritage.

But what led an Old World, xenophobic gentleman to create one of literature’s most far-reaching mythologies?  What attracts even the minds of the 21st century to these stories of unspeakable abominations and cosmic gods?

LOVECRAFT: Fear of the Unknown examines these questions through conversations with today’s luminaries in the field of dark fiction including:

Guillermo Del Toro (director - Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy)

John Carpenter (director - Halloween, The Thing)

Neil Gaiman (author - Stardust, American Gods)

Peter Straub (author - Ghost Story, Lost Boy Lost Girl)

Stuart Gordon (director - Edmond, Re-Animator)

Ramsey Campbell (author - The Inhabitant of the Lake)

S.T. Joshi (author/biographer - H.P. Lovecraft: A Life)

Caitlin R. Kiernan (author - Daughter Of Hounds, Silk)

Andrew Migliore (founder - H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival)

Robert M. Price (author / editor - Crypt of Cthulhu)
